about

i am suddenly aware was recorded at WPTS 92.1 and throughout Pittsburgh in the winter/spring of 2001. It was originally supposed to be released by the indie pop tape label Blackbean and Placenta. Why didn't it? Great question! I think a couple reasons - one, I think we may have taken too long to record it, and they moved on. Two, I think typical band tensions kind of soured us all on putting it out and committing to whatever touring/PR would be required of us in 2001. And three, Kyle was off to grad school, and I was soon to follow, functionally ending the band (at least until we put out our EP and toured for a bit in 2005/6).

But we've always liked these songs a lot, and then in the depths of Covid Quarantine, I rediscovered them on my hard drive and fell in love with them again and all four of us were like, "Well, what's stopping us from putting this on Bandcamp? Literally nothing." I mean, unless Spectrum takes away my internet privileges for torrenting British comedies again.

So this is our lost album! Enjoy it in the car or while walking your dog or wherever you enjoy fine albums! And yes, half the lyrics I wrote were about what I was reading at the time: undergrad analytic philosophy and The Thin Red Line.

about

harm Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Maximalist indie rock with 30 casios and 3000 melodies... harm was a casiopop project started by Kyle Bittinger & Andy Beckerman in 1997 in Pittsburgh, PA. In the '90s, a lot of twee stuff used casios as kitsch. Kyle & Andy thought it might be better to use them to write really good pop songs instead. The band eventually expanded to include two awesome musicians Cindy Yogmas & John Lancia. ... more
